HOW TO GET MORE FROM YOUR WINE

Colour and Appearance
Tilt the glass away from you against a white background, to give you an idea of the colour of the wine.  White wines gain colour as they get older whereas red wines lose colour.

Smell
Swirl the wine in the glass to to allow the wine to mix with oxygen thus releasing the bouquet.

Smell the wine by passing the glass under your nose.  If the first reaction is pleasant, stick your nose into the glass and breath in. It may smell fruity, floral, spicy, woody or you may be able to me more specific such as blackcurrant.

Taste
You have taste buds all over your mouth so try to ensure that all your palate is covered.

  • Sweetness - found on the tip of the tongue.
  • Fruit and Varietal Characteristics - found in the middle of the tongue.
  • Acidity - found at the sides of the tongue and on the cheeks.
  • Body - was the wine light (like water), medium or full bodied?
  • Tannin - found on the middle of the tongue, a tannic red wine will often leave a feeling of furriness on your teeth.
  • Alcohol - gives a warming sensation in the mouth and binds all the other elements together.
  • Aftertaste - this is the overall taste that lingers in your mouth and usually a sign of a high quality wine is a long, pleasant aftertaste.
